The Founder

Pharm. James E. Adama

With over thirty years of experience in the pharmaceutical sector, Pharm. James E. Adama built Ugbede-Eben Nigeria Limited on a simple conviction: that a community is only as healthy as the guidance it can trust. That conviction still shapes how the firm operates today — every prescription checked twice, every client heard fully, every product sourced with care.

His practice spans clinical dispensing, institutional consultancy, and applied research, giving him a rare, whole-picture view of how pharmaceutical care actually reaches people in Benue State — from the shelf, to the counter, to the home.

"Good pharmaceutical care is not measured at the point of sale — it's measured in the outcome, weeks later, in the patient's own home."

— Pharm. James E. Adama

Health & Wellness Notes

Practical Guidance, From Our Counter to Your Home

Short, plain-language notes on everyday health, hygiene, and medication safety — written by the Ugbede-Eben team. These are general guidance only; always speak with Pharm. James or another qualified professional about your own situation.

Field Note — General Health

Everyday Health Tips for a Stronger You

Good health is built in small, repeatable habits rather than occasional big efforts. A few practices go a long way toward keeping you and your family well through the year:

  • Drink water consistently. Keep a bottle nearby and sip through the day, especially in Otukpo's hotter months.
  • Eat a varied plate. Mix vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and protein rather than relying on one food group.
  • Move daily. A brisk 20–30 minute walk most days supports heart health, sleep, and mood.
  • Protect your sleep. Adults generally need 7–9 hours; consistent bedtimes matter as much as total hours.
  • Don't skip check-ups. Routine screening catches problems while they're still easy to treat.

None of these habits require special equipment or a big budget — they just require consistency.

Field Note — Hygiene

Hygiene Habits That Protect Your Whole Household

Most everyday illness spreads through simple, preventable routes — unwashed hands, contaminated water, or shared surfaces. Strong hygiene habits are one of the cheapest, most effective forms of healthcare available to any household.

  • Wash hands properly. Use soap and clean water for at least 20 seconds — before eating or preparing food, and after using the toilet or handling waste.
  • Keep drinking water clean. Store it in covered containers and boil or treat water from uncertain sources.
  • Handle food safely. Wash fruits and vegetables, cook meat thoroughly, and keep raw and cooked food separate.
  • Keep living spaces ventilated and swept. Reducing dust and standing water also reduces mosquito breeding sites.
  • Teach children early. Hygiene habits formed young tend to last a lifetime.

If a household member is unwell with a suspected infectious illness, extra care with handwashing and separate utensils helps protect the rest of the family while they recover.

Field Note — Medicine Safety

Handling Medicines Safely at Home

How medicine is stored and handled between the pharmacy counter and the moment it's taken matters just as much as what's inside the pack. A few simple rules keep every household member safe:

  • Store medicines correctly. Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and refrigerate anything that requires it.
  • Keep medicines out of children's reach. Use a locked cabinet or high shelf — never store medicine in a place a child could mistake for sweets.
  • Never mix different medicines in one container. Keep each in its original, labelled packaging so dosage and expiry stay clear.
  • Check expiry dates regularly. Discard expired medicine rather than "finishing it anyway."
  • Dispose of unused medicine properly. Don't pour liquids down the drain or leave loose tablets in household bins — ask your pharmacist about safe disposal.
  • Never share prescription medicine. A medicine prescribed for one person's condition can be the wrong — or dangerous — choice for someone else.
If you're ever unsure whether a medicine is still safe to use, bring it to our counter — we're glad to check it with you rather than have you guess.
Field Note — Medication Adherence

Taking Your Medication the Right Way

A correctly prescribed medicine only works if it's taken correctly. Getting the details right protects both its effectiveness and your safety:

  • Follow the prescribed dose and schedule exactly. Don't increase, reduce, or skip doses without speaking to a professional first.
  • Complete the full course. This matters especially for antibiotics — stopping early, even if you feel better, can allow illness to return or worsen.
  • Take note of food and timing instructions. Some medicines work best on an empty stomach, others need to be taken with food — ask if you're unsure.
  • Tell your pharmacist about every medicine you're taking. Combining medicines — including herbal remedies — can cause unexpected interactions.
  • Watch for side effects. If something feels wrong after starting a new medicine, don't wait it out silently — get in touch.

When in doubt about how to take something you've been prescribed, ask us. A two-minute question at the counter is always better than a guess at home.

Field Note — Professional Care

Why a Professional Should Always Examine You Before Any Medication

It's tempting to treat symptoms based on what worked last time, or what a neighbour recommended. But two illnesses can look identical on the surface and need completely different treatment — and some symptoms that seem minor are early signs of something more serious.

A proper examination before medication is administered matters because it:

  • Confirms what's actually being treated, rather than assuming based on symptoms alone.
  • Accounts for your full health picture — existing conditions, allergies, and other medicines you're taking.
  • Catches interactions and contraindications before they become a problem, not after.
  • Gets the dose right for your specific case — age, weight, and condition all affect what's appropriate.
  • Flags cases that need more than medicine — some conditions require referral, monitoring, or urgent care.

This is true whether you're picking up a prescription, considering an over-the-counter remedy, or reaching for something already in the medicine cabinet. Our team is here precisely for this reason — to examine, verify, and advise before anything is administered, not just to hand over a pack.
